Web Gallery of Art
Not what man knows but what man feels, concerns
art. All else is science.
(Bernard Berenson, 1897)
The picture files are of JPEG format and appear as thumbnails. To view them in their original size, click on the thumbnail. Some of the pictures are rather big, 200 Kbyte or more, and the resolution is often higher than 800 pixel in one or both directions. Be patient therefore if you decide to view them on-line or download them for off-line viewing. For viewing the pictures a viewer with zooming capabilities is recommended (the internal viewers of the Web browsers typically have no such capability), and the use of 486 or higher processor is necessary to decompress the JPEG files within reasonable time. Since the color depth of the JPEG format is inherently 16,7 M (true color) it is preferable to use a video driver for this color depth. However, you can use 64 K (high color) driver without any decrease in quality of the displayed image. Generally the use of 256 color driver results in recognizable thumbnails and poor quality full images.
All textual information (object and file data, detailed comment) are included in the comment block of the JPEG files, therefore on downloading the picture you download automatically all informations, too. (In fact the organization and presentation of this site is based on the comment blocks, using a software developed for this purpose.) For viewing a downloaded file off-line, a viewer capable to show the comment block of JPEG files is therefore recommended.
The essential data of both the art objects (author, title, date of creation, size, location) and the files (size, color depth, resolution) are given for all pictures. Additional comment - either a short remark or a detailed explanation - can be found for some (and a hopefully increasing part) of the pictures by clicking on the icon with the letter "I".
For artists of considerable importance detailed biographical data are also available. When applicable, you can get them by clicking on the link named "Biography" on the upper left part of the page.
To navigate within the Gallery you can always reach the Alphabetic Index or Artist Index, as well as the Search Engine by using the links located at the bottom of the pages. Your comments and suggestions are invited and they can be sent by clicking on the "Mail" link to be found also there.
