MORETTO da Brescia (originally Alessandro Bonvicino)
Pieta

1520
Wood
National Gallery of Art, Washington
In this important early work by Moretto, Christ
is mourned by the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and Mary Magdalen.
By introducing the grandeur and monumental composition of Venetian masters,
particularly Titian, Moretto brought new stature to the local Brescian
shool of painting.
