The Death of St. Clare

1410
Wood
National Gallery of Art, Washington
Saint Clare, a disciple of Saint Francis of Assisi,
was the founder of the "Poor Clares", an order of nuns devoted
to charity. Here, on her deathbed, she is attended by the Virgin Mary and
a group of martyred saints, each identified by a particular symbolic attribute.
The curiously elongated figures, tooled gold background, and sense of mystical
devotion are characteristic of the International Style of the early fifteenth
century.
