The Pieta of Villeneuve-les-Avignon

1456-57
Panel painting
Musée du Louvre, Paris
The Virgin weeping over the dead Christ, with
Saint John and the Holy Women - painted on wood "a tempera" with
a gilded background, and a series of intertwining bands (guilloché)
for the Chartreuse of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, where it remained till the
Revolution. A work that is moving in its simplicity by the purity of its
lines, its ample draperies, the firm character of the portrait of the donor,
with his sunburned face. This Pieta witness to the high quality of the
medieval school of French painting.
