MASTER of the Avignon School
Pieta

c. 1460
Tempera on wood, 162 x 218 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris
The Virgin is weeping over the dead Christ, with
Saint John and Mary Magdalen. The painting was made for the Chartreuse
of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, where it remained till the Revolution. This
work is moving in its simplicity by the purity of lines, its ample draperies,
the firm character of the portrait of the donor, with his sunburned face.
This Pieta witnesses the high quality of the medieval school of French
painting.
